Daniel R. Isbell

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. I completed my PhD in Second Language Studies at Michigan State University in 2019 and previously earned an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from Northern Arizona University. I am an Associate Editor at Language Learning and serve on the Editorial Board of Language Testing.

My primary area of expertise is language assessment. I frequently do research on second language speaking and maintain research interests in instructed second language acquisition and technology in language learning.

TipResearch and Consulting

I regularly work with government, non-profit, and commercial organizations. Sometimes this takes the form of commissioned research, consulting, or service on committees/advisory boards. Depending on the nature of the research or consultancy, activities may fit within my ‘day job’ (and go through my university) or may be something I do as an independent consultant. Feel free to get in touch if you have an opportunity that my skills would be a good fit for.
